Child Counseling Services for children ages 2-7 and also suitable for children ages 2-11
Is your young child acting in ways that leave you overwhelmed? Tried star charts, time outs, and reward systems without success?
Is your child exhibiting any of these behaviors that are leaving you exhausted?
- Aggression
- Defiance
- Tantrums and crying spells
- Not responding to your requests
- Overly clingy
Perhaps it is becoming a bigger problem for you:
- Playdates have been canceled because others are unhappy with your child’s behavior
- School called again
- Meltdowns in public
You are not alone.
If you are not sure what to do next to manage your child’s challenging behaviors, let us help.
Our child therapists offer a proven parent-child treatment program for parents in this situation at OC Relationship Center. The goal is to improve the child’s behavior by improving the parents’ interactions and helping parents learn to manage the most challenging behaviors.
This proven treatment program, called Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, has been helping children with behavior problems for over two decades.
Here is how it works. PCIT is conducted via coaching sessions. You and your child are in your own home, and during your session, the therapist is observing you and your child interact via video (secure telehealth via phone or computer.) The parent has an earbud, which allows the therapist to coach you moment to moment on skills you are learning to manage your child’s behavior. How cool is that?
We conduct PCIT in two phases. The first phase is to increase the connection between you and your child as you learn techniques to help your child feel calm, secure, and confident. The goals of the first phase are to
- Decrease frequency, intensity, and duration of tantrums
- Increase attention span
- Increase self-esteem
- Reduce parental frustration
The second phase of PCIT is to arm you with the skills and techniques to manage the most challenging behaviors. Your therapist will teach you proven strategies to help your child be less defiant, less aggressive, and have more respect for authority, all while helping you feel more confident and calm.
If you are tired of being overwhelmed by your child – and even some days not liking your child – please consider PCIT counseling at OC Relationship Center.
We are here for you.
